Head Coach

Biography:

2nd year Head Coach of girls soccer, Ed Leibe, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to West Ashley High School. A native of Hamilton, New Jersey, Ed began playing soccer at the age of 9. He played for highly renowned Steinert High School where he led the Spartans to the Mercer County Championship in his senior year. His success on the field resulted in the NSCAA (McDonald’s) and Adidas Soccer to honor him as a high school All-American in 1981. Ed’s career then took him to North Carolina State University where he played two years before transferring to perennial powerhouse University of Maryland. While at Maryland, Ed helped the Terrapins to a national ranking as high as 8th in the country. After graduating from college he continued to play for several semi-professional teams in the Northeast. He has also been inducted into the Steinert High School Hall of Fame, Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame and New Jersey High School Coaches Hall of Fame.

Ed began his coaching career at Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC. and then moved to Glen Burnie High School in Maryland where he took over as Head boys soccer coach in 1989. While coaching high school, Ed also trained teams throughout Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He was invited to coach a select team from Maryland to travel throughout Europe for TeamsUSA. On that trip in 1988 Ed earned a coaching certificate from the esteemed Dutch National Team organization KNVB. Upon returning home, he settled to teach and coach in Toms River, NJ. In 1996 he began coaching the Girls Varsity team at Toms River High School North where his teams consistently finished at the top of their league and won their conference title in 1998. A move across town to Toms River High School South to coach the Boys Varsity in 2002 proved to be a nice fit where his teams have had winning records in 14 of their 15 seasons. Ed’s TR South teams won several league titles followed by 4 State Sectional Titles in 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2009 Toms River South won the overall Group 4 State Championship. Coach Leibe was then named Coach of the Year by the Asbury Park Press, AllShore Media, NFHS, and the NJSIAA. In his career Ed has amassed over 300 wins.

Along with coaching, Ed also is teaching English at West Ashley High School. Ed is excited being a member of the West Ashley community where he lives with his wife and two young children. Go Wildcats!!!
